Information Literacy Prize

The Information Literacy Prize at Dundalk Institute of Technology recognizes work that illustrates sound Information Literacy skills.

Information Literacy Prize 2019/2020

Calling all second years!

In recognition of the role that information literacy skills and feedback plays in helping you develop academic writing, we are inviting submissions from all 2nd year students in DkIT for the Information Literacy Prize 2019/2020.

A Kindle Fire will be awarded for the most engaging piece of academic writing. There will also be prizes for the best engagement with feedback.

In 2nd year you know what is needed to have your written work taken seriously in an academic context. It involves developing a scholarly approach to finding information, using it appropriately and communicating your thoughts in a scholarly style. Perhaps the most important factor in learning to write effectively is engaging with the feedback you receive on your written work and using this to improve your academic writing.

How to Enter

To enter the competition you have to submit a piece of academic writing (maximum of 2000 words) and submit a short questionnaire. The work has to be submitted through Turnitin on Moodle. You can submit something you are currently working on as part of your coursework, or you can write a piece specifically for the competition.

How we will review your writing

The criteria are organised into something called a rubric. For each specific element or criterion, e.g. referencing, three different levels of achievement are explained.

You will be able to use this rubric to help you complete the questions on the self-assessment form that you submit with the assignment. For each element, simply highlight the level you feel best describes the piece.

Prizes of Kindle Fire Tablets

Phase 1: Submit your written work and complete a self-assessment questionnaire

Submit your written work for feedback on Moodle by 9am on 20th December 2019. Also complete and submit the short self-assessment questionnaire.

The most engaging written piece will win a Kindle Fire. There will also be prizes for students who best explain how the information provided in the feedback will be used in other assignments.

[Please note that we will not provide feedback on the subject-specific content, and we can accept writing only: we cannot consider drawings, artefacts, code etc. Submitted work must be 2000 words or less (not including references).]

Feedback will be provided by 5th December 2019. This will be provided via Moodle and you will be notified by email. The feedback will focus on aspects of information literacy and academic writing that are detailed in the rubric discussed previously.

Phase 2: Complete online Reflections on Feedback form

When you get the feedback on your written work you can then complete an online Reflection on Feedback form. A link to this form will be provided with your feedback. When you complete this form you are essentially creating a plan on how you would use the feedback provided to inform future academic writing. This is the information that will be judged for the prize for best engagement with feedback. The closing date for this phase of the competition is midnight on 31st January 2020.

Prize winners will be announced in March 2020

Question about the Information Literacy Prize?

  • De Chastelain Library

Engaging with feedback is one of the most effective ways to improve your writing skills. The feedback you receive will show you how to improve your Information Literacy and academic writing skills by developing arguments, exploring background reading, and referencing correctly.

As the competition is primarily concerned with Information Literacy and not with subject-specific content, you may notice a difference between how your work is assessed for the Information Literacy Prize and by your lecturer.
