DkIT Celebrates 50 Years

04 May 2021

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) celebrated its 50th Anniversary on May 3rd 2021. This unique occasion in the institute’s lifetime not only presents a brilliant opportunity to celebrate DkIT's achievements and journey over the past 50 years but is also a time to focus on the bright future that lies ahead.

The President of Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dr Michael Mulvey, has paid tribute to the past 50 years in a message to all staff and students:

Dear Colleagues,

Today is a momentous occasion for DkIT as we celebrate our 50 years. DkIT is a young-at-heart institute with a rich history and track record of remarkable regional impact and contribution.

Since our inauguration on the 3rd May 1971, the institute has been an engine for growth, possibility and discovery for the families, communities and businesses in our region and long may it continue!

Over the past 50 years, the institute has shown unwavering commitment to providing skills-focused education to a diverse cohort of students, often from families with no prior experience of Higher Education. This has resulted in a powerful network of graduates in Higher Education and Craft Apprenticeships, as well as Research, Innovation and Community, who have been instrumental in energising and building up a region that generates wealth, cultural activity and social inclusion.

As with every great organisation, we stand on the shoulders of others and nowhere is this more true than DkIT. The work, talent, creativity and ingenuity of those who have gone before provide the platform for today as we strive for even greater levels of excellence and impact. DkIT has been a place of friendship, mentorship and personal and professional growth for our staff. We look forward to creating opportunities to share these memories and recognise the contribution of our people past and present. As we celebrate, so too this is also a moment to reflect on staff and students who passed, we will remember them, even as we power forward with confidence and belief into the future.

Over the next year we look forward to reflecting on our truly significant impact and celebrating with you and our wider community through a variety of events, initiatives and commemorations. We have established an organising committee who will contribute towards an eclectic programme of activities and we look forward to sharing these with you over the coming weeks and months. This week we are commencing a social media campaign, “50 Years Friday” which will involve sharing images from the DkIT archive to reflect on moments from our history. Your contributions are welcome, please contact marketing@dkit.ie with your suggestions.

For now, I hope you will join me in wishing our colleagues, students and friends, past and present, a very happy 50 Years celebration.

Best wishes,

Michael Mulvey, PhD
