DkIT Computing Students take part in A.I.B. Datahack

16 students from DkIT’s BSc (Honours) in Computing and BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development took part in the A.I.B. Datahack. The event took place at A.I.B. Bank Centre in Dublin. This is an annual event that is open to all third-level students on the island of Ireland. The competition attracts entries from universities and institutes of technology in both The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Students are able to compete in either the Hackaton or the Datathon competition. The Hackathon involves teams of two students being given ten hours to design and build an application for mobile or web platforms. The Datathon involves teams of two students being given ten hours to solve a data analytic challenge.

This year, the theme for both competitions was sustainability. Teams had to come up with an idea that promoted a sustainable lifestyle that was focused on energy saving. At the same time, the solution needed to make business sense.

The teams from our college performed well in both competitions. They presented their creative ideas in front of a panel of expert judges and fellow contestants. Among the teams, Deivydas Vasiliauskas and Nikola Zlokapa - both from the BSc (Honours) in Computing year 2 -finished the day with an excellent result. Their mobile app “Parallax – Energy Efficiency Profiler” was ranked among the top five finalists from the 32 entrants.

Third year BSc (Honours) in Computing student Jiale Chong summed up the general mood of the group, saying “It was a fantastic experience. It was helpful, not just in the sense of improving my programming skills, but also in terms of learning how to work in a team under intense time pressure”.
