25 May 2017

The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology is delighted to announce the launch of Fís 17 taking place on Wednesday 31 May 2017 at 6pm in the Carroll Building. The building houses a state-of-the-art TV studio, audio and radio recording studios, a photographic darkroom, performance spaces, edit suites and a screening room which has facilitated the development of innovative projects and exhibitions once again this year.

The exhibition will remain open to the public on Thursday 1 June from 12pm-6pm and all are welcome to attend. Admission is FREE.

Fís 17 will feature exciting, new, innovative and creative work from students on our Communications, Video and Film, Music Production, Media Arts and Technologies and Multimedia Web Development programmes at DkIT. The projects, installations and films being exhibited and screened will represent the diverse creative skills of our students and are of interest to a wide audience.

Speaking about the launch of Fís 17, Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, noted

‘the importance of opportunities such as Fís to allow students the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their achievements and share them with their community. The skills developed by the students while working on their projects will make them industry ready and we are confident that this year’s graduates will become leaders in the creative industries nationally and internationally. The projects highlight the contribution that graduates of DkIT can make in the context of the new Creative Ireland Programme 2017–2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy.’

Films directed and produced by students on the BA (Hons) Video and Film Production include themes of gender and science fiction. In Divilment four Irish ‘mammies’ plan and execute the daring robbery of a hotel safe, while Ludd features an artist who is living in a world dominated by Luddites, a political movement that violently opposes the spread of technology. The projects from students on the BA (Hons) Communications in Creative Multimedia tackle a range of themes such as the college experience for mature students, schizophrenia and civic engagementTracks produced by students on BA (Hons) Production of Music and Audio include a diverse range of genres  including rock, jazz and electronic music and these will be available at listening stations in the Carroll Building.

Projects undertaken by students on the BA Media Arts and Technologies reflect their engagement with innovative technologies during the year with monsters featuring prominently in their creations! The Monster Hunters go on a journey to uncover mysteries about creatures from international folklore, while Nass is a series of interactive story books for children containing stories by children about their experiences in natural disasters.

Fís is a wonderful opportunity for both industry leaders and local communities to come together and enjoy creativity and the arts in the creative hub of Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Fís 17 promises to be an exciting exhibition and all are welcome to join us.
