Major contribution to Irish Music Scholarship by DkIT Researcher

Congratulations to PhD researcher Sarah Burn whose current research work has received critical acclaim through major public performances by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and subsequent international broadcast. As part of Sarah’s doctoral dissertation on the Sinfonia “de Profundis” by A.J. Potter (1918-1980), under the supervision of Dr Eibhlís Farrell and Dr Ita Beausang, she has completed a critical performing edition of the symphony. The new full score and orchestral parts of her edition were used by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, conducted by David Brophy, for their performance of the Sinfonia “de Profundis” at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on 14 September in the landmark ‘Composing the Island’ series of concerts of music by Irish composers, 1916-2016. This performance was followed by numerous broadcasts of Potter’s seminal work which now, thanks to Sarah’s forensic and authoritative editing work, has been made available to a global audience. Other works by A.J. Potter were performed by the Band of the Defence Forces School of Music, conducted by Lt Col Mark Armstrong, in the National Concert Hall on 10 September. This concert included Potter’s Finnegan’s Wake, in the critical performing edition made by Sarah as part of her research MA at DkIT. Sarah is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading music editors and typesetters, and her work is much in demand from performing bodies such as the RTÉ Orchestras, the National Concert Hall, BBC, Wexford Festival Opera, Dublin International Piano Competition, music publishers, the Contemporary Music Centre, composers and for studio recording sessions.
