Sophie Watters

BA in Sport, Exercise and Enterprise

“I’d encourage girls to come to DkIT, it is very good even the social aspect of it is very good and they can keep up their sport.”

Sophie has been part of the u17 Republic of Ireland women’s squad as well as the being part of last year’s u19 Ireland squad and she is also the centre-mid for Shelbourne FC Ladies.

Sophie Watters (19) explains her love of sport:

“When you are playing at a high level, you obviously want to keep playing at as high a level as you can, you really don’t want to drop unless you have to,”

The Dundalk native recently referred her first match after doing the FAI referee course, another opportunity she says came her way as a result of picking DkIT.

She began her soccer with Dundalk-based Quay Celtic and as well as having made the Ireland selection squad a number of times she also plays for Shelbourne FC’s ladies team.

She applied to DkIT after doing a PLC course in the adjacent O’Fiach College where one day Derek Crilly, the Sports and Societies Officer with DkIT gave a talk on the Sports Scholarships.

Having secured her place on the ‘BA in Sport, Exercise and Enterprise,’ degree course and on a sports scholarship, Sophie combines her studies with football and gaelic training as well as additional strength and conditioning sessions and she continues to play with Shels as well as on the college gaelic team.

She says the course suits her because,

“I was always interested in it and it is something I always wanted to do. With this course including business, it is something that you will always have.”

She is in the first year of the 3 year course; at the of year 3 she can pick between business and sport for her fourth year for her level 8 degree.

“I’d encourage girls to come to DkIT, it is very good even the social aspect of it is very good and they can keep up their sport.”

“When you are playing at high level you obviously want to keep playing as high a level as you can, you don’t really want to drop unless you have to. There are opportunities too to go and do things like an FAI referee course.”
